Napoleon
the pig, who becomes the leader of the Animal Farm after the rebellion. His character is based on Joseph Stalin. Napoleon uses his military (the 9 loyal attack dogs) to intimidate the animals and use his power learn more. Napoleon is more dangerous than Snowball.
Snowball
the pig who challenges Napoleon for control of the Animal Farm after the rebellion. His character is based on Leon Trotsky. Snowball is intelligent, passionate, eloquent, and less subtle and devious than his counterpart Napoleon. Snowball seems to win the loyality of the other animals and secures his power.
Boxer
The cart-horse whose incredible strength, dedication, and loyality play a key role in the early prosperity of Animal Farm and the later completion of the windmill. He always helps, but is not very smart. Boxer shows more devotion to the ideals, but has little independence to think on his own. He trusts the pigs and believes two things.
1) I will work harder AND 2) Napoleon is always right.

Squealer
the pig who talks about and spreads Napoleons ideas and propaganda among the other animals. Squealer tells the other animals that it's ok that Napoleon uses the resources and lies about how good the farm is doing. Mr. Orwell, the book's author, uses Squealer's character to show how people in power can use fancy words and make things look better or different from what they really are.
Old Major
the prize-winning boar (pig) whose vision or dreams of a socialist utopia inspire and make the other animals in the Manor Farm become the Animal Farm. He inspires the animals to rebel and rise above the humans. Old Major calls the animals into the barn and tells him of a dream he had. Three days after this, Old Major dies. He leaves Napoleon and Snowball in charge. Mr. Orwell, the book's author, based Old Major's character on Karl Marx, a German politaical economist, and the Russian revolutionalry leader Vladimir Ilych Lenin.
Clover
A good-hearted female cart-horse and Boxer's close friend. She always thinks the pigs are breaking one of the seven commandments, but she forgets what the commandments are sometimes.
Moses
The tame raven (bird) who talks about and spreads stories of Sugarcandy Mountain, the paradise to which animals supposedly go to when they die.
Mollie
The vain, flighty mare who pulls Mr. Jone's carriage. Molly craves attention of human beings and loves being groomed and pampered. She has a harder time on the farm when there are only animals and no humans. She misses wearing ribbons and eating sugar cubes.
Benjamin
The long-lived donkey, who refuses to feel inspired by the Rebellion. He feels life will remain unpleasant whoever is in charge. He sees the changes in the farm, but does nothing.
Muriel
The white goat who reads the Seven Commandments to Clover whenever Clover thinks some animal is breaking the commandments/rules.
Mr. Jones
The drunk farmer who runs the Manor Farm before the animals stage the Rebellion and establish the Animal Farm. He is an unkind master. His character is based on Tsar Nicholas II, who the Russian Revolution kicked out.
Mr. Frederick
The tough, shrewd operator of Pinch field, a neighboring farm. His character is based on Adolf Hitler, the ruler of Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. He is not to be trusted.
Mr. Pilkington
The easygoing gentleman farmer who runs Foxwood, a neighboring farm. Mr. Frederick's bitter enemy. Mr. Pilkington represents the capitalist government of the United States and England.
Mr. Whymper
The lawyer that Napoleon tries to hire to represent him in the human society. He tries to get the humans and animals to communicate. This causes the animals to be scared.
Jessie and Bluebell
Two dogs, they both give birth early and Napoleon takes the puppies to train them to be attack dogs.
